Experimenting With Mobile Concept Apps

I wanted to work on my skills in product design by turning some ideas into concept mobile apps. Most of my professional work is in website design for government entities and other organizations, and I didn’t want to have a gap in my skill set when it came to designing for mobile applications.

The projects below are some ideas and screens I came up with over the years.

MEDcommunicate

I wanted to create a concept app that would assist with translating medical needs, from interacting with healthcare professionals to understanding how insurance works or what a diagnosis means.

Goals:

  • Multi-language functionality

  • Usability for both patients and providers

  • Pre-installed phrase lists to facilitate conversations and communicate needs

  • A simple translation interface with mic assistance for verbal translation when needed

  • A medical ID that can be set up with any important information related to the patient

  • Additional resources related to insurance and diagnoses, available in the patient’s language

SMPL

The concept for SMPL was to create an app that would help improve the accuracy of payroll submissions from companies that rely on manual timekeeping. Payroll discrepancies have a huge negative impact on employee morale and retention for companies that rely on manual timekeeping, and I wanted to find a way to reduce these errors by putting some control back into the employees’ hands.

Goals:

  • An easy way for employees to review hours worked, then submit for review/approval

  • Fewer unintended “surprises” for employees on pay day

  • Shared responsibility for verifying that time worked is accurate
